Just like your personal car; tanks and other armored vehicles can get stuck in the snow or mud, run off the road, break down or otherwise be unable to move under their own power.
A simple tow truck is not going to be able to solve that problem. A cost effective way to deal with those issues is to take a standard tanks that is in otherwise good condition but needs a replacement turret and instead, use it as an armored recovery vehicle.
By using the standard tank you get a vehicle that has sufficient power to pull another tank out of the ditch. Without the burden of a heavy turret, and ammunition, and not having a turret, the tank has reserve power it can use to retrieve another tank.
Many nations soldiers made these vehicles in the field from tanks damaged in battle. In peacetime, or for tanks sent back to the factory for rebuilding, they often receive heavy winches, armor plate over the opening where the turret used to be and other recovery vehicle specific equipment.
If you have an old vehicle in your collection that is missing a turret, perhaps this conversion might be a way to put that old warrior back in service.
This is a Roco T-34 tank, in HO scale. This particular model is at least 40 years old.
