Corral Your Paints

One of the worst disasters is to knock over a bottle of paint onto your workspace.  I have done this a number of times over the decades and it is always at least an inconvenience and sometimes a massive disaster.

Here are two solutions to the problem of knocking over your paint jars that I use.

My wife makes cinnamon rolls that come in a cardboard tube.  The icing comes in a little plastic cup.  I take the plastic cup and use it to hold my paint jars.  As seen in the photo, line the cup with paper towels.  Then adjust the towels until the paint is securely snuggled into the plastic cup.

This way if you bump the paint jar, the wide body of the plastic cup, will nearly always prevent the paint from spilling.  The cup will slide across the the desk rather than get knocked over.

Note the glass next to the plastic cup.  This is another technique that I use to prevent paint spills.  Sometimes a paint jar may be too tall to be safety put into the little plastic cup.  So I use the glass jar that originally held a votive candle.

Once the candle has been burned out, dump the remains and clean out the glass.  You end up with essentially a shot glass.  The heavy weight of the glass will usually prevent the paint from falling over if you bump it.

Since I have instituted these procedures I don’t think I have spilled any more paint and I have been doing this for the last 5 or 6 years at least.
